The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) was established in 1986. It is a premier institute of fashion studies and has campuses all throughout the major cities of the country such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Rae Bareli, Kolkata and Shillong. Many prominent names from the fashion industry are part of the large alumni base of NIFT. It offers a wide range of graduate and post-graduate courses in fashion design, management and technology. NIFT exams are conducted in the formats of General Aptitude Test (GAT) and Creative Aptitude Test (CAT). The courses offered by the institute on the basis of performance in these tests are:
Ø       Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) (Accessory Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design, Textile Design)
Ø       Master of Design Fashion (M.Des.)
Ø       Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech.) (Apparel Production)
Ø       Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M.)
Ø       Master of Fashion Technology (M.F.Tech.
Since NIFT 2015 is an entrance exam for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate programs NIFT colleges offer, you must ensure that you are eligible to study these programs before registering for NIFT 2015 exam. The eligibility criteria for various NIFT programs are listed:
Students applying for the Bachelors programs offered at NIFT must not be more than 23 years old as of 1st of October, 2014. This eligibility criterion is relaxed for 5 years for Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribe/ Differently Abled Person (PHP). Students applying to the bachelors courses must have any one of the following qualifications:
Ø       The +2 level examinations in the 10+2 pattern of examination of any recognized Central/State Board of Secondary Examination, such as CBSE / State Board New Delhi, and CISCE, New Delhi.
Ø       General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri-Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level/ International Baccalaureate (IB).
Ø       Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in Foreign countries recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system.
Ø       A pass grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
Ø       3 or 4-years diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.
Ø       The +2 level examinations in the 10+2 pattern of examination of any recognized Central/State Board of Secondary Examination, such as CBSE / State Board New Delhi, and CISCE, New Delhiwith Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Ø       General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri-Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level/ International Baccalaureate (IB) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Ø       Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in Foreign countries recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to 10+2 system with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Ø       A pass grade in the Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Ø       3 or 4-years diploma in any branch of engineering recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.
There is no age limit for applying to Master's programs. However, all applicants must meet the either of the following criteria to be eligible for admission to the programs:
Ø       Undergraduate Degree from any Institute / University recognized by law in India
or
Ø       Diploma in UG Design from NIFT/ NID only 
or
Ø       Undergraduate Diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT / NID.
Ø       Undergraduate Degree from any Institute / University recognized by law in India.
or
Ø       Undergraduate Diploma of minimum three years duration from NIFT / NID.
Ø       B.F.Tech. from NIFT
Ø       B.E / B.Tech from any Institute / University recognized by law in India.
Applications to the programs offered at NIFT will be done via online for the academic year 2015 - 2016. The prospectus is available free of cost on the NIFT's official website
All relevant payments may be made via credit or debit card. In case of Demand Drafts, the amount will be payable to "NIFT HO" payable at New Delhi.
Rs. 1400 (through NIFT payment gateway) and Rs. 1500 (through Demand Draft) - for General & non-creamy OBC category applicants
Rs. 800 (through NIFT payment gateway) and Rs. 900 (through Demand Draft) -  for SC/ ST/ PHP category applicants
All candidates applying and making the payment through a DD (Demand Draft) must mail the print out of the application form, along with the DD to the following address, before 14 January, 2015:

Entrance exams to all courses offered at NIFT will be taken in two phases. Phase One (PBT I) of the examinations will comprise of the first round of paper based tests. Phase Two of the examinations will comprise of the second round of tests which could either be paper based (PBT II) or computer based (CBT), depending upon the particular course. Negative marks of 0.25 are deducted for every wrong answer.
For admission to the Bachelors of Design, the total score of every applicant will be a composite of:
Ø       50 per cent - General Ability Test (GAT)
Ø       30 per cent - Creative Ability Test (CAT)
Ø       20 per cent - Situation Test
For admission to the Bachelors of Fashion Technology, the total score of every applicant will be based on their General Ability Test (GAT) score.
For admission to the Masters of Design, the total score of every applicant will be a composite of:
Ø       40 per cent - Creative Ability Test (CAT)
Ø       30 per cent - General Ability Test (GAT)
Ø       30 per cent - Group Discussion or Personal Interview
For admission to the Masters of Fashion Technology, the total score of every applicant will be a composite of:
Ø       70 per cent - General Ability Test (GAT)
Ø       30 per cent - Group Discussion or Personal Interview
For admission to the Masters of Fashion Management, the total score of every applicant will be a composite of:
Ø       70 per cent - General Ability Test (GAT)
Ø       30 per cent - Group Discussion or Personal Interview
Ø       CAT 10.00 am to 01.00 pm
Ø       GAT 02.00 pm to 04.00 pm
Ø       CAT 10.00 am to 01.00 pm

The General Ability Test for B.Des and M.Des will have the following segments:

Communication Ability - 35 Questions
English Comprehension - 30 Questions
Analytical Ability - 30 Questions
General Knowledge and Current Affairs - 30 Questions
The General Ability Test for B.FTech, MFM, M.Des AND M.FTech will have the following segments:
Quantitative Ability - 30 Questions for B.FTech and M.FTech and 10 Questions for MFM
Communication Ability and English Comprehension - 45 Questions for B.FTech and M.FTech and 50 Questions for MFM
Analytical and Logical Ability - 25 Questions for B.FTech, M.FTech and MFM
General Knowledge and Current Affairs - 25 Questions for B.FTech, M.FTech and MFM
Case Study - 25 Questions for B.FTech and M.FTech and 40 Questions for MFM
The Creative Ability Test (CAT) assesses an applicants' intuition skill, observation ability, innovative and design ability. Use of color and illustrative abilities are also important here.
On the basis of their performace in CAT and GAT, B.Des applicants are called for another test called the Situation Test. Situation tests are meant to examine applicants' skills for material handling and innovative ability on a given situation with a given set of materials. Assessment will done on the basis of space visualization, innovative and creative use of given material, composition of elements, color scheme, construction skill , finesse of the model and overall presentation etc. The write-up describing the course carries 30 per cent weightage and can only be in English.
Applicants selected for Masters Programs from the written entrance examination will participate in Case Study based Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interview(PI). The duration of GD session is usually 15 to 20 minutes. Applicants will be examined on the following criteria:
Ø       Conceptual clarity
Ø       Knowledge of the topic assigned
Ø       Contribution made to the topic
Ø       Interpersonal skills
Ø       Ability to generate new ideas
Ø       Problem solving approach
Ø       Leadership qualities
Ø       Effective communication
In the PI, applicants will be examined on the following criteria:
Ø       Career orientation
Ø       Aptness for the field
Ø       Overall personal achievements in academics and co-curricular activities
Ø       Communication
Ø       General awareness and aptitude, creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.

  1. Today, education is very much compulsory to build a good career. Students are used to wandering here and there for right career and best guidance. This year NIFT 2015 written exams are designed to test knowledge, skills and aptitude of the candidates for the program opted. The objective type tests are subject to negative marking at the rate of 0.25 for each wrong answer. Each right answer will be rewarded 1 mark.
